SEAWEED RESEARCH AND UTILISATION ASSOCIATION

Instructions to Authors

This Journal started its first publication in December 1971 and is the official publication of the Seaweed Research and Utilisation Association (SRUA).  Contributions are accepted on all aspects of basic and applied research on algae (Resource assessment, Systematics, Ecology, Biology, Culture, Cytology, Anatomy, Physiology, Nutrition, Biomedical Application, Utilisation, etc.) leading to a unifying platform for taxonomists, ecologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, and industrialists. Papers are accepted based on the originality, meritorious data, and novel ideas and the expected potential impact the research would create on the field. Reviews are generally solicited, but interested authors are encouraged to contact the Editor in Chief. The submission of a manuscript for consideration for publication in this Journal implies that the said work is original, has not been published so far, and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Authors are requested to follow strictly the guidelines given below to avoid unnecessary corrections and revisions in the style of the manuscript. Original Research and Critical Review articles are considered for publication in this journal. Short Communication, Book Review (~ 1000 words), and Opinion (~ 1000 words) are welcome from the Senior Members of SRUA. Manuscripts are welcome from any country but must be written in English. The soft copy of the manuscript prepared in the prescribed format with all figures, and tables inserted at the appropriate places must be sent to the Chief Editor by email (seaweedrujournal@gmail.com) as a Single File. Separate files of photos, line drawings, and graphs (in Word or Excel) have to be submitted for editing purposes.

Peer Review

This journal follows a single-anonymised peer review system. Editor-in-Chief first determines that the paper meets the appropriate quality, format, and relevance. The papers authored by members of the Editorial Board will be sent to Editors unaffiliated with the author or to external subject experts and monitored carefully to ensure there is no peer review bias. Acceptance of the manuscripts is subjected to Peer Review and the Editor in Chief is the final authority regarding acceptance or rejection of any manuscript.  A soft copy (PDF) of the journal and the published paper will be provided to the corresponding author and no reprints of papers will be provided.

Format of manuscripts

Title: The title should be short, specific and informative. This should be followed by the authors’ names with initials and full addresses of the organisations where the work was done. Any change in the address of the authors may be stated as a footnote. The corresponding author may provide the email address also.

Abstract: Abstracts should not exceed 250 words. Each abstract should clearly state the objective of the study, results, and conclusion.

Keywords: Authors should provide 4 to 6 keywords.

Text: The manuscript should be in Microsoft Word format and typed in double space with 12 point font size in Times New Roman for the body of the text. Words such as genus, species, subspecies, and genotypes; Latin terms and abbreviations; Name of Journal, be italicized. The manuscript should include the following sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Disclosure of Conflict of Interest, and References. The methodology should be sufficiently described to allow the work to be reproduced. If an already well defined methodology is followed, mere citation is enough. If there is any deviation, details should be given. The results part should have only one form of data presentation (Table or Graph) in the text. Insert your graphics (schemes, figures, etc.) in the main text after the paragraph of its first citation. The discussion should be comprehensive and logical focussing on the findings of the study.

Literature Cited: References may be cited in the text using the following formats: Krishnamurthy (1985), (Krishnamurthy, 1985), Krishnamurthy et al. (1968), (Krishnamurthy et al., 1968), (Krishnamurthy, 1968; 1970; 1972). Literature cited should be arranged alphabetically according to the surname of the first author and formalities as in the following examples. Care must be taken while typing commas, semicolons, etc. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the world list of scientific periodicals and should be given in italics. The inclusion of DOI numbers (Digital Object Identifier) is not mandatory but highly encouraged.

Tables and Figures: Each Table should be numbered in Arabic numerals and must be typed on a separate page or embedded in the appropriate place of the manuscript and have a concise explanatory heading. More than 10 columns should be avoided. To improve the quality of the tables, horizontal lines should be used. Avoid all vertical lines. To facilitate the copy-editing of larger tables, smaller fonts may be used, but no less than 8 pt. in size. All symbols or abbreviations used must be briefly and clearly explained in footnotes. Authors urged to use the Table and Figure option of Microsoft Excel or Word.

Photographs: Ensure that the image files submitted are high resolution jpeg, or tiff. All light and electron micrographs must include easily perceptible scale bars. Images must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Figures should be planned to fit either one column (8 cm) or two columns (17 cm) in width and be no more than 24 cm in length. Images embedded in a Word or PDF file are not acceptable. Line drawings should be roughly twice the final printed size and should have legends.

New taxon names

Manuscripts that introduce new taxon names must follow the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants rigorously, illustrated with photograph(s) or line drawing(s), including diagnostic features. All holotypes of species or infraspecific taxa must be deposited in a recognized herbarium and the assigned accession number must be included. New species or subspecific taxa must include at least one diagnostic DNA sequence with the GenBank accession number.

Authorship
All authors included in the manuscript should have contributed substantially and have agreed to be included in the order of the final submitted version. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to ensure it.

Disclosure of conflict of interest

The Seaweed Research and Utilisation journal requires all authors to disclose any potential sources of conflict of interest in any form related to the work intended to be published. A conflict of interest does not preclude publication in this journal. If the authors have no conflict of interest to declare, they must also explicitly state this. It must be mentioned under the Acknowledgements section with the concurrence of all authors.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is considered as copying or an attempt to misattribute original ideas, text, figures, or results.  The authors must refrain from verbatim reuse of text, self-plagiarism, or duplicate (or redundant) publication. By submitting your manuscript to this journal, you accept that your manuscript is devoid of any plagiarised content.

Funding
It is the responsibility of the authors to list all funding sources in the Acknowledgments section with all pertinent details as required.

Reproduction of Copyright Material

If excerpts from copyrighted works are included, it is the responsibility of the corresponding author to obtain necessary permission for reproduction from the copyright owners.

Ethical rights

Researchers should be free to conduct research and communicate their knowledge and ideas freely but not without ethical obligation. If the work involves the use of human or animal subjects, the author should declare that all procedures were performed in compliance with relevant national laws and institutional guidelines and that the appropriate institutional committee(s) has approved them. The ethical standards of experiments must follow the guidelines provided by the CPCSEA (animal) and ICMR (human).

Page Proofs

The corresponding author will receive the PDF proofs via email. Authors should pay particular attention to verifying numerical material, tables, lists of names, and figure captions and markings. The corrected proofs should be returned within 5 days from the date of receipt.

Publication Charges

There are no submission fees, publication fees, or page charges for this journal. A nominal manuscript processing fee based on the number of pages, graphs, and photographs will be charged.
